Make Your Own Audiophile DIY Passive Preamp

December 18, Many vinylphiles have. The shielding on your ICs either the ICs from the turntable to the phono preamp or from the phono preamp to the line stage is insufficient to prevent the electromagnetic radiation pickup. Do you live close to a radio station transmitter? Check your neighborhood for radio towers and power lines. I tried everything that I could dream up but the only thing that fixed it was when I moved. Currently I have a very low level hum that I am picking up. I have tried all sorts of things and I was beginning to think it was a ground loop. I proved where it was by disconnecting the phono leads from phono preamp and placing rca caps over the inputs. The hum disappeared, so it was being picked up from the phono leads or the tonearm. I replaced that with a set of Audioquest Leopards and the hum picked dropped greatly.

June The road to making your own DIY audiophile passive preamp can be long or short. Both my parents were hands-on makers, doers and fixers as long back as I can remember. Phono (MM) Preamp: The Pro-Ject Phono Box MM allows you to connect a turntable with a MM (moving magnet) cartridge to a home receiver or amplifier without a dedicated phono input. Metal Case: The Phono Box MM’s metal case shields the electronics from vibration and electromagnetic interference/5(52).

Solid-state Bi-Wire Ideas Most solid-state power amplifiers are far cheaper than most tube power amplifiers. There, however, exceptions, as massive solid-state class-A power amplifiers cost a bundle. One idea that has danced in my mind for a long time now is that I would like to force a chip amplifier, such as the LM , into class-A mode More amazingly, DACs are getting better, almost monthly; and high-res digital music files can be bought and downloaded online.

This is certainly great news, but for us tube-loving folk our goal is to get hold of the analog output from our DACs as soon as we can, prior to the delicate signal traveling through any solid-state OpAmps Balanced Outputs One advantage of a balanced output signal is that as long as the receiving balanced amplifier delivers a high CMRR at its input, much of the balanced power-supply noise will be ignored.

When I first saw the Grounded Grid preamp by Transcendent Sound, simple was the word that entered my mind — not simple as in “simple-minded,” not simple as in “easy. No, simple as in “not complicated. The specs say it weighs 10 pounds — sopping wet, perhaps. Built like a tank it isn’t. The aluminum case is just that and nothing more, an aluminum case.

McIntosh Labs, D 2-Channel Digital Preamplifier, Preamplifier, 2-channel, stereo preamp, Preamplifier Reviews While I have typically been more a home theater/multi-channel audio kind of guy, I have been slowly delving into the realm of high-resolution stereo.

I, personally, am a bit leery of method. The output of the swell capacitor is a fairly high impedance node. From the back of the organ: Locate the silver box on top of the AO amplifier that houses the Expression control electronics. It is easily identified as an arm connects the expression pedal to the box, and there is an RCA jack located on one side of the box. We’re going to turn this input to a dedicated output.

Remove the 4 flathead screws that hold the box cover on. These screws are in the sides of the expression pedal box, not on the bottom. Look at the inside of the RCA connector. Cut the lead that connects this cap to the RCA plug. Carefully push this off to the side, and tape the lead so that it does not short out against the metal box or other internal components. This will allow you to revert back to a “stock” M3 should you later decide to.

Sonos Staff replies Thinking about getting a turntable setup with your Sonos system and wondering where to start? We’ve got you covered. If you’re looking for a quick overview before you dive into the details below, check out the info we have over on our blog. Before getting started, we need to ask a simple question— Does my turntable need a phono preamp? Turntables output their signal at phono level, which is a low, quiet signal rated in millivolts.

Overview The psus on naim amps are always tempting to mod or diy as they appear simple but are actually a bugger to get right. Its easy to spend hundreds on making one that sounds no better than the powerrail off a Naim poweramp- I have several toroids and dozens of regulators and reservoir caps to prove the point.

Once you know what to look for however, its not difficult to make a better one for a fraction of the cost of a naim psu. Probably also why they are so attractive to the modder. Essentially they consist of transformer, reservoir caps, rectifiers and regualtors. IMO the regualtors are the dominant factor affecting sound quality of the psu but transformers also have a part to play as does getting the earthing right.

I have found reservoir caps and the rectifiers to be of minor importance as long as they are of good industrial quality. Bear also in mind that Julian Vereker once stated that for power transmission low impedance is critical and for signal transmission low capacitance. This is principally because off the shelf toroids are useless from an audio point of view and unless you know how to specify a custom one you’ll probably get nothing better.

However a good transformer can make a significant contribution to sound quality, giving a bolder, more vibrant and solid presention with ‘darker’ backgrounds and more instrumental seperation. Size is around VA. My advice is to get a C-core from avondale or R-core from Hifi tuning see components page.

My unit is an older “T8” version that probably dates back to at least The most current version is the “T9”, which I have not heard. The PP-1 is a pretty little unit. The dimensions are roughly that of a reasonably stout remote control control, except it’s in a fairly beefy chassis with a mirror-polished chrome finish. The unit is powered by a small wall wart transformer.

That seems cheap, but later it became clear to me that it’s a great idea to get that transformer as far from the unit as possible.

Page 1 Page 2 It seems like, every few years, Krell goes through a major cosmetic and sometimes engineering revamp. Visually, the song always seems to be the same: The new Illusion II digital preamp embodies the same industrial design ideas as the new iBias amplifiers: It’s still macho, though. It’s a straightforward high-end digital preamp–i. If it seems like something’s missing, it is: This isn’t a big deal; you just need to add a USB-to-coax converter, which I’ll discuss in the Hookup section below.

The Illusion II also has four stereo analog inputs: There’s no built-in phono preamp; so, if you want to use a turntable, you’ll have to provide the phono pre. For the Illusion II, Krell uses much the same control system as in its other recent preamps and integrated amps including the S i integrated I usually use for speaker reviews. You can do all the normal stuff, like volume and input selection, from the front panel or remote.
